    Nail salons in South Dakota must hold an establishment license from the SD Cosmetology Commission (Department of Labor and Regulation, 217 W. Missouri Ave., Pierre, 605-773-6193, [email protected]). The first license issued for a new nail salon or booth is a 90-day permit; the Commission inspects the salon during that 90-day window. If the inspection passes, an annual license is issued that expires on the business's opening date and must be renewed each year after passing a yearly inspection. If the inspection fails, all deficiencies must be corrected before the 90-day permit expires. You may not open for business before the salon/booth permit license is received by mail and posted. A booth license covers an individual independent contractor renting space in a salon. A home nail salon needs a salon license plus a separate outside entrance completely separated from the living quarters. Licenses are valid only for the original owner(s) and original address. Individual nail technicians need 400 Commission-approved education hours and their own operator license.
