An applicant must be at least 18, be a Maine resident or a nonresident with a business or place of employment in Maine, pass the notary public examination that forms part of the official application, and take the oath of office before a Dedimus Justice before the commission issues.    Lewiston does not require a general business licence or registration, and licensing is run by the City Clerk's Department (207-513-3124), not the Finance Department.
