   Each barber must hold a Barber Hair Stylist licence from the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology within the Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation - only individuals licensed under 32 MRSA section 14227-A may hold themselves out as barbers or hair stylists. Eligibility requires either 800 hours of barber hair styling instruction over not less than 5 months at a licensed school, or 1,600 hours as a trainee over at least 10 months, plus passing the approved examination. The shop itself must separately hold an establishment licence.

   Barber shops in Maine must hold an establishment licence from the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology within the Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation - there is no separate 'Board of Barbering and Barber'. Establishments are licensed at Level 1 or Level 2 depending on the services offered, with a mobile establishment licence available for barbers who travel. Each barber working there must separately hold a Barber Hair Stylist licence.    Lewiston does not require a general business licence or registration, and licensing is run by the City Clerk's Department (207-513-3124), not the Finance Department.
