The training itself is not taxable, and not merely by omission: gym and club dues are normally taxable amusements in Tennessee, but effective July 1, 2019 the General Assembly added an exemption for persons principally engaged in offering services or facilities for the development or preservation of physical fitness through exercise or other active physical fitness conditioning, which Revenue's manual applies to gyms, fitness centres, fitness studios, high intensity interval training, cross training, ballet barre, Pilates, yoga, spin and aerobics. Revenue is equally explicit on the other side of the line: tangible personal property sold by physical fitness facilities, such as clothing, equipment and beverages, remains subject to sales and use tax. In Nashville taxable sales are charged at 7% state plus 2.25% Davidson County, for 9.25%.

   Required for businesses conducting business within Metro Nashville-Davidson County. Issued by the Davidson County Clerk's Business Services office, not the Metro Finance Department. A personal trainer with annual gross receipts of $3,000-$99,999 obtains a minimal activity license; at $100,000 or more, a standard business license plus Tennessee business tax filed with the Department of Revenue through TNTAP. Under $3,000 in gross receipts, no license is required. Trainers working as employees of a studio are covered by the studio's license rather than their own.
