1. Ohio Electrical Contractor License (OCILB)

   Ohio does issue a statewide electrical contractor license: the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCILB) licenses five trades - electrical, plumbing, HVAC, hydronics and refrigeration (ORC 4740.01) - and no one may act as or hold themselves out to be an electrical contractor without it (ORC 4740.13). It is a single contractor license, not tiered apprentice/journeyman/master licenses; applicants must show five years as a tradesperson in the trade (or an equivalent qualifying path) and pass the required examination (ORC 4740.06). Work limited to fire and burglar alarms, cabling, telecommunications, sound and communication systems, and landscape lighting or irrigation operating under fifty volts is excluded from electrical contractor licensure (ORC 4740.13(D)). A municipality may require local registration and fees, but only of contractors who already hold the state license (ORC 4740.12).
