Sole proprietors or partnerships operating a personal training business under a trade name in NYC must file a Business Certificate with the County Clerk in their borough of operation. In Manhattan, file with the New York County Clerk.
NYC Certificate of Occupancy (for fitness studio)
If opening a dedicated personal training studio in a commercial space in NYC, a Certificate of Occupancy indicating the space is approved for assembly/fitness use is required from the NYC Department of Buildings. Any physical alterations require building permits.
New York State Requirements
