   Maine notaries are commissioned by the Secretary of State's Division of Corporations, UCC and Commissions. An applicant must be at least 18, be a Maine resident or a nonresident with a business or place of employment in Maine, pass the notary public examination that forms part of the official application, and take the oath of office before a Dedimus Justice before the commission issues. Maine does not require a surety bond. The exam is based on the Secretary of State's published Course of Study; renewals are completed online through the Total Notary Solution and the signed exam and oath mailed to the Bureau.

   Bangor has no general business license and no fee based on gross revenues. The City Clerk licenses only the activities enumerated in the City Code and fee schedule - for example victualers (eating places), lunch wagons, liquor, taverns, amusement devices, bowling, theaters, carnivals and circuses, innkeepers, pawnbrokers, secondhand and precious-metals dealers, taxis, mobile home parks, flammable liquid and explosives dealers, and marijuana establishments. If your activity is not on that list you need no city business license, only zoning and code compliance.
