  1. City of Fairbanks — City Business License

Every business operating inside Fairbanks city limits needs a City Business License from the City Clerk’s Office (800 Cushman Street, 907-459-6702), in addition to the Alaska state business license. Each separate line of business needs its own license. Licenses expire the last day of January and renew by the last business day of February; the City will not issue a building permit to a business without a valid license.

Tiered on prior-year gross receipts inside city limits under FGC 14-602: $50 up to $49,999, $120 to $249,999, $350 to $999,999, $580 to $2,999,999, $1,125 to $9,999,999, and rising to $25,000 at $120 million and above. Youth licenses (under 18) are $1. Renewals received on or after March 1 incur a $50 penalty1–3 weeks

  2. City of Fairbanks Building Department — Certificate of Occupancy

A final inspection and Certificate of Occupancy (or Certificate of Completion) is required from the City of Fairbanks Building Department (907-459-6720) before a building inside city limits may be occupied, and a change of use triggers a new review. The Fairbanks North Star Borough has not adopted a building code and issues no building, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical permits — those apply only inside the City of Fairbanks (or North Pole). Outside the cities, commercial buildings go to the Alaska State Fire Marshal, and the borough issues only a free zoning permit.

    Official government source

No separate certificate of occupancy fee is published — it is covered by the building permit. Building permits are valuation-based under Table 3-A: $17 for valuations up to $500, $50 plus $10 per additional $1,000 in the $2,001–$25,000 range, $455 plus $5 per additional $1,000 in the $50,001–$100,000 range. Total is the permit fee plus 75% plan check plus a fire review of 15–20%. A change in occupancy without alteration is $3402–6 weeks
