1. Alaska Board of Massage Therapists — Massage Therapist License

   Massage therapists in Alaska must be licensed by the Alaska Board of Massage Therapists within the Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing. Licensure by examination requires at least 625 hours of in-class supervised instruction and clinical work from an approved program, a passing examination score, at least two hours of bloodborne pathogens/universal precautions education, and a fingerprint-based background check. A separate Massage Establishment Registration is required for the business location.

   Every business operating inside Fairbanks city limits needs a City Business License from the City Clerk’s Office (800 Cushman Street, 907-459-6702), in addition to the Alaska state business license. Each separate line of business needs its own license. Licenses expire the last day of January and renew by the last business day of February; the City will not issue a building permit to a business without a valid license.

2. FNSB Zoning Permit and City of Fairbanks Certificate of Occupancy

   The Fairbanks North Star Borough has not adopted a building code and issues no Certificates of Occupancy — its Community Planning department (907 Terminal Street, 2nd floor, 907-459-1260, [email protected]) issues a free zoning permit confirming your project meets the setback and use requirements of your zoning district, and separate residential and commercial/industrial applications are published. Inside City of Fairbanks limits, the City Building Department (907-459-6720) performs the final inspection and issues the Certificate of Occupancy; a change of use triggers a new review. Outside the cities, commercial buildings are reviewed by the Alaska State Fire Marshal.
