2 stopsSouth Dakota Cosmetology Commission - Salon License
All hair salons in South Dakota must be licensed by the SD Cosmetology Commission (Department of Labor and Regulation, 217 W. Missouri Ave., Pierre, 605-773-6193, [email protected]). The first license issued for a new salon or booth is a 90-day permit; the Commission inspects the salon during that 90-day window. If the inspection passes, a license is issued that expires annually on the business's opening date and must be renewed each year after passing a yearly inspection. You may not open for business before the salon/booth permit license is received by mail and posted. A booth license covers an individual independent contractor renting space in a salon. A home salon needs a salon license plus a separate outside entrance completely separated from the living quarters. Salon and booth licenses are valid only for the original owner(s) and original address - a move or ownership change requires a new license.
Official government source$75 initial salon or booth permit (a 90-day permit); $55 annual license renewal. Related fees: $75 per re-inspection, $15 duplicate/replacement business license, $30 per lapsed year penalty. The first license is a 90-day permit; the Commission inspects during that period and issues the annual license on a passing inspection. No Aberdeen General Business License Required
Aberdeen does not issue a general business license. The City Finance Office (Auditor Division, 605-626-7023) issues licenses only for a specific enumerated list of activities: ambulance driver, ambulance service, garbage hauler, community event, day care, junk dealer, lottery notice, mobile home park, pawn broker, street use, shooting gallery, special event alcohol, taxi/motorbus company, taxi/motorbus driver, transient merchant/solicitor, and alcohol. Trades such as plumbing, HVAC, and pest control are not on that list and need no city business license. Their state-level licensing applies instead: plumbing through the SD Plumbing Commission, pesticide application through SD DANR, and there is no statewide HVAC or mechanical contractor license. A South Dakota sales tax license from the Department of Revenue is still required.
