LARA's Bureau of Professional Licensing states its Licensing Division regulates occupational professions under the Michigan Occupational Code and publishes the full list — accountancy, appraisal management companies, real estate appraisers, architects, barbers, collection agencies, cosmetology, professional engineers, hearing aid dealers, landscape architects, personnel agencies, real estate brokers/salespersons, and professional surveyors. Tutoring is not among them. MDE educator certification governs teaching in schools, not private tutoring. Register your entity with LARA's Corporations, Securities & Commercial Licensing Bureau if forming an LLC or corporation, or file an assumed name certificate with the Kent County Clerk as a sole proprietor. 2. Grand Rapids — Home Occupation Class B License (tutoring students at your home)

   If students come to your home for tutoring, Grand Rapids requires a Home Occupation Class B License, issued by the City Clerk's Office (not Planning and Zoning). The city states the license is needed when 'customers or clients visit your home' and that if all customers are online or you travel to your customers, no license is required. Conditions: no more than 2 adult customers, clients, students, or patients on the premises at any one time; the dwelling must be the principal residence of the owner-operator; the applicant must be sole owner, joint tenant, or joint tenant by the entireties of the real estate; condominium association approval is required where applicable and city code does not supersede association rules. Applicants need a valid driver's license and must owe no money to the City (court fees, property taxes, parking tickets, or city income tax). The application requires a floor plan of the entire home with the business space marked, and zoning must be confirmed with the Planning Department (616-456-4100) before applying. The Fire Department contacts the applicant to schedule an inspection.
