   LLCs and corporations must register with the Illinois Secretary of State by filing Articles of Organization or Articles of Incorporation. Sole proprietors, general partnerships, and professional service corporations operating under a trade name must also file an Assumed Business Name registration with the Cook County Clerk; LLCs, LLPs, LPs, and ordinary corporations are exempt from that county filing. A Cook County assumed name registration must be published in a local newspaper once a week for three consecutive weeks.

1. Chicago Limited Business License (BACP)

   Yoga studios in Chicago generally need a City of Chicago Limited Business License from BACP — there is no BACP license category for "fitness" or "assembly" businesses; BACP assigns a license type based on your business activities. 2. Chicago Occupancy Classification, Change-of-Occupancy Permit and Capacity Sign

   Chicago does not run a separate certificate-of-occupancy application with its own fee for a studio in existing space -- the Department of Buildings establishes the occupancy classification through the building permit. If the space's occupancy classification changes (for example from Group B or M retail to Group A assembly), you need a change-of-occupancy permit under the Chicago Building Rehabilitation Code. A studio with an occupant load of 50 or more is classified as Group A-3 assembly and must meet the tighter egress, plumbing-fixture and fire-safety requirements for that group. Separately, a maximum capacity sign (occupancy placard) is required for any room or space where more than 100 people gather, and may be required for smaller spaces as a condition of the business license (Section 14A-8-802).
